Bringing Zinc Tinnies Back to Life

Postby Joe Cassidy » Tue Feb 26, 2013 2:18 pm

Here's an Erfurt 37-01 tinnie that arrived in the mail today. It is going the way of all black zinc tinnies in that it is turning grey and is becoming hard to read. Not to worry, there's a solution to bringing them back to life. I use a very small dab of mineral oil on the tip of my finger and rub it in until the luster returns and the tinnie is readable. The mineral oil also provides a protective coat to, hopefully, stop or slow the aging process. I've attached below and after photos.

Good tip. I've tried Vaseline with limited success.

This worked great for me Joe...thank you! :D

I must admit that I didn't know what mineral oil was exactly. I walked into the local super market and asked for it and was given a kind of awkward look from the worker. She walked me over to the aisle and pointed me to the laxatives! Trying to be cool I quickly said "I'm using it for a hobby project"...I don't think she bought it though!

While at the Show of Shows I used my wire brush and, with a small bit of whatever oily substance I had on hand, was able to demonstrate the resurrection of seemingly ready for the trash heap tinnies. This was to the amazement of several customers, who bought the tinnie that had been brought back from the dead. :D

I coated something awhile back, now I have to recall what it was, hunt it up and see how it's doing. :)
